The National History Project: a two-year fact-finding investigation into the teaching of Canadian history, social studies and civics in the elementary and secondary schools. Findings reported in "What Culture? What Heritage?" (the Hodgett's Report) with suggestions for improvement. Suggestions led to a pilot project, currently four years old. Examples and descriptions of the success of the pilot project follow. Two examples: the Outaouais Project, and Projects of the Canada Studies Foundation: a five-year pilot project funded primarily privately; descriptions of the succesful programmes. Suggestions for what might happen next.
