President and CEO, The Hospital for Sick Children
Dr. Apkon is a physician executive and physician scientist serving in C level leadership roles at several top academic hospitals in the United States and Canada. He has served as the CEO at SickKids, since January 2014. In that capacity, he leads a 300 bed hospital staffed by 10,000 employees, scientists, medical staff, students and volunteers with a $1 BB budget. SickKids is recognized as one of the world’s top children’s hospitals, Canada’s most research-intensive hospital, and a highly successful clinical, educational, and research organization. In addition
to his role at SickKids, Dr. Apkon Chairs the Ontario Provincial Council on Maternal and Child Health, a provincial program of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care aiming to foster the evolution of a more effective provincial healthcare system for women and children. He also serves as a Director of MaRS Innovation, a commercialization cooperative and incubator for the life sciences and technology industries in the greater Toronto area.
Dr. Apkon has extensive international management experience in both pediatric and adult oriented healthcare, working with organizations and governments in the UK, Europe, China, Africa, and the Middle East as well as North America. He has consulted widely on business development, capacity development, and management systems as well as quality and safety improvement. He is an expert in strategy, systems development, and operations management, as well as the application of lean and high reliability organizational thinking to drive improvements in quality, safety, and efficiency.
In addition to deep expertise in healthcare strategy and management Dr. Apkon has considerable experience with corporate governance and with government relations. In his current role, he reports directly to the Board of Trustees and has directly supported the governing bodies of his prior employers. He has also served as a Trustee for not for profit healthcare organizations and for other charitable organizations as well as serving as a Director for MaRS Innovation, Director for a pre revenue medical device company, and as an Officer for the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario. Current and prior roles have resulted in considerable experience working with Provincial and State governments as well as with Federal and international governments.
Prior to coming to SickKids, Dr. Apkon was Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and the Chief Medical Officer for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia ,CHOP, and Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania as well as a practicing Paediatric Intensive Care specialist. Dr. Apkon also served in leadership roles at Yale University School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Health System including being the Vice President for Performance Management at the Yale New Haven Health System and the Vice President Executive Director leading Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital as well as serving on the faculty of Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Management.
Dr. Apkon has a BSc degree in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University as well as MD and PhD degrees from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and an MBA from the Yale School of Management where he taught healthcare management.
