So business models and strategies, and now boards of directors must transform at warp speed. Social activism, media hyper-transparency, seismic demographic and workforce shifts, digital technology, geopolitical instability, shareholder activism and ‘unknown unknowns’ are making the old ways of oversight obsolescent and irrelevant.

Rahul Bhardwaj, President and CEO, the Institute of Corporate Directors, will discuss what today’s active and accountable board leadership looks like - and how active and engaged board leaders can foster and support competitive advantage.

Purpose-Driven Leadership

Topic: Purpose-Driven Leadership

On Dec. 2, the Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, Mayor of Vaughan, will address The Empire Club of Canada to discuss purpose-driven leadership. After 30 years of public service that have taken him from Parliament to the cabinet table to City Hall, he has witnessed failures and successes in government. Mayor Bevilacqua understands that elected officials must lead with purpose rooted in hope, optimism and determination. With a clear mission, he continues to bring about the ultimate urban transformation. Under his leadership, Vaughan now has an economic growth rate of four per cent, has created more than 60,000 new jobs and remains the only municipality outside of Toronto to be linked by the subway. Mayor Bevilacqua was also instrumental in bringing the city’s and York Region’s first post-secondary institution – Niagara University.

Philanthropy has long shaped Mayor Bevilacqua’s service to others. He chairs the $250-million Ultimate Campaign to build Canada’s first smart hospital, and through the efforts and events of his Spirit of Generosity commitment, more than $70 million have been raised to help over 200 worthy causes. Never subscribing to populist politics and opportunism, his focus and success are attributed to doing what is best for the citizens he represents.

Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua P.C., Mayor, City of Vaughan

The Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua is currently serving his third term as Mayor of the City of Vaughan. Prior to becoming Mayor, he was a Member of Parliament for 22 years, serving in several roles including Minister of State for Finance, Minister of State for Science, Research and Development, as well as Chairman of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. He is presently the Chair of the Alectra Utilities Integration Committee, Vice Chair of York Region Rapid Transit Corporation, Chair of the Hospice Vaughan Capital Campaign as well as Chair of the Mackenzie Health Foundation $250- million Ultimate Campaign. Mayor Bevilacqua is a member of the York Region Police Services Board, a member of the Global City Leaders Advisory Board for the World Council on City Data, as well as a member of the Advisory Council for the Post-Grad Certificate in Business Administration at York University's School of Continuing Studies. He is also a past Vice-Chair of VersaBank and past Chair of Powerstream Energy Services.

Mayor Bevilacqua holds the record for most votes ever received by a candidate in Canadian political history as well as most votes ever received by a municipal candidate in the history of the City of Vaughan. On October 22, 2018, Mayor Bevilacqua was re-elected in a sweeping victory that delivered another strong mandate to govern. An ardent supporter of local charities and community groups, through his Spirit of Generosity fundraising initiative, more than $70 million has been raised in support of more than 200 charitable and not-for-profit organizations in Vaughan and beyond. His vision of Vaughan as a world class city has set new standards in city building and redefined the political landscape in Vaughan.
